So it was 8 years ago this month that I decided to give up refined, processed and cane sugar for 1 week. Well, 1 week turned into 1 month, 1 month turned into 1 year and here I am heading into year 8. After the first week, it became easier and after the first month I knew that I was on the right track. I was developing and changing recipes so that I wasn’t missing out on any comfort foods that I enjoyed.
In all honesty the hardest thing for me was giving up candy, chocolate and baked sweets. After the first year or so everything I was making that would normally require refined, brown or any other kind of sugar, was easily replaced with dates as my sweetener. And now this is the only thing I use to replace sugar and I have no desire to change. As I have said before, I have never looked back and I have never regretted making this change.
OK, so I know that a lot of people will say “but dates are full of sugar” of course they are, why do you think I am using them as an all purpose sweetener? Well, all I have to say is ” MY SUGAR HAS FIBER” and if you compare dates to refined sugar, well really there is no comparison.
